Thinking outside the box

Great nurses problem solve, even when no one asked them to. Yesterday I was working with a baby whose only current problem is that he’s having trouble eating.  Mom was there with her 2 other kids, and the feeding specialist showed up. The siblings (ages 6 and 8) were distracting mom while she fed the baby and the feeding specialist had the deer-in-the-headlights look, wondering what to do about this circus.

Step 1: there’s a bookshelf down the hall with children’s books. Get a book and ask big sister to read it to big brother.

Step 2: when they lose interest in the book fish through purse for crayons.  Grab paper from the printer.  Ok, kiddos. Your job is to draw some pictures for your baby brother.  Show me what you can do!

Problem solved.  Results pinned to wall. Everyone happy.  Mom beaming.
